Building your baby’s nursery can be fun but it can also be stressful. If you have ever searched Google for what to put in your baby’s nursery or on your registry, you may have become overwhelmed. Online baby registries often have a lot of things on them. Some items may be useful and some useless. You may be asking yourself, “Do I really need to buy all these things for my baby?” “How can one tiny baby need so much stuff?”
So what do you really need for your nursery? How can you distinguish between the essentials and the non-essentials? As a Postpartum Doula and a Newborn Care Specialist, I have compiled a list of baby items I think you won’t want to go without.
A car seat. Make sure you get the installation checked out by a Child Passenger Safety Technician. I know, car seats may seem easy enough if you follow the instructions, but shockingly about 80% of car seats are installed improperly.
Crib or bassinet that meets the current American Academy of Pediatrics safety guidelines. You will also want a good quality organic mattress and some sheets, but bumpers and blankets are not recommended for safety reasons. A lot of our clients really like the HALO Bassinest for room sharing. A swing or bouncy seat is also recommended, but never for sleeping. 4Moms mamaRoo is a very popular one with our clients.
Swaddle blankets. If you want your baby to sleep, you will want some of these. The Miracle Blanket is very popular, as are the Aden and Anais muslin swaddle blankets.
Changing table area with a pad and covers. In the changing area, you will also want a diaper pail, diapers, baby wipes, and diaper rash cream.
Baby clothes. Friends and families love to buy baby clothes because they are so small and adorable. Add a few onesies, daytime outfits, and sleepers or nightgowns. For nighttime, have some without zippers, snaps, or velcro. In Nashville, we have some great stores such as Arcade, Rich Hippies, and Magpies that always have the hippest baby clothes.
A good sound machine. Make sure it has regular white noise and does not have an automatic shut-off.
Nursing supplies if you are breastfeeding include a hospital-grade breast pump, a breastfeeding pillow such as Boppy or My Brest Friend. If you are bottle feeding (and even if you aren’t, it is still a good idea to have these items as well), make sure you get a few bottles with stage 1 nipples such as Dr. Brown’s or Playtex, a bottle warmer or mini crock pot if you are expecting multiples, a bottle brush both big and smaller, a bottle drying rack or pad, a nipple basket or sterilizer, and burp cloths. A few pacifiers are also advantageous if you want your baby to sleep.
Baby bath time supplies, such as towels, washcloths, a bathtub, mild soap, and a baby hairbrush or comb. A couple popular bathtubs include Puj and 4Moms.
Rocking chair in the nursery to feed and hold your baby along with a nearby table to keep things like water, burp cloths, and tissues. Put a small trash can with liners next to it so if you need to throw something away while holding baby, you don’t have to leave it on the table to get to later and you don’t have to get up and go across the room to throw it away. Plaid Rabbit in Green Hills has some great furniture for baby’s room.
Baby carrier and/or stroller. Moby Wrap, Tula, and Ergo are all very popular with our clients for babywearing.
A good quality diaper bag. Babymel, Nest Designs, and Pacapod have some great options for stylish bags that don’t look like diaper bags.
Baby monitor. Some moms also really like motion sensors such as Owlet and Babysense, especially if they have a premature baby.
There are, of course, many other things you may want to get for your baby. Many times, families buy a bunch of baby items, only to not use the majority of them. With this list, you can begin to build a baby registry or begin shopping for items for your baby’s nursery that you are sure to use.
What else would you add to this list? What baby item could you just not live without?
